Send Free Text Messages to Gaza & West Bank

Following Google’s August 2009 launch of, Palestine now joins the US, Israel & Ghana as countries where you can send SMS text messages for free. The available networks:

  • Palestinian Territories: Jawwal & Wataniya Mobile
  • Ghana: MTN, Zain, Tigo, Kasapa
  • Israel: Pelephone and Orange
  • United States: All operators

So, if your friends and/or family are on Jawwal or Wataniya Mobile, login to your Gmail/Googlemail account and try sending using the format: +970 xx xxxxxxx

NOTE: if you don’t see the ‘Send SMS’ option in your Gmail/Chat window, you will need to goto Settings > Labs and enable the “Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat” feature first.

Sending and receiving SMS from Gmail is free but the recipient will be charged the standard rate when replying to the message.
